Rehab Patient

At Narconon Arrowhead we do not use the term rehab patient when referring to our program participants. Instead we use the word “student” as it more accurately reflects what is occurring in our program. At Narconon Arrowhead once withdrawal from use is achieved and is followed by a full bodily detoxification then student is then ready to gain the life skills and abilities needed to pursue a drug free productive life. Cravings, guilt and depression must be confronted, dealt with, and eliminated is one is to achieve a lasting drug free existence. These skills and abilities can be learned and successfully applied. Our students enjoy a 76% success rate that speaks for itself.

The decision to face the need for addiction treatment, whether it is for oneself or for one’s loved ones) is never an easy decision and one is often left with the ‘hope’ that the decision made was a good one. Long term treatment options have proven to be much more effective in preventing continual relapse that often occurs following the more short term addiction treatment options. Addiction treatment should also be an empowering experience, giving the addict the tools needed and putting them into a position to actually change the conditions of their lives and so be able to actually maintain a drug free and productive life. Generally speaking, rehab hospitals are short term programs dealing primarily with medically safe withdrawal from drug or alcohol. Extreme alcoholism as well as some drugs, especially prescription drugs, have life threatening side affects from stopping use cold turkey and need to be medically supervised. Most stays in rehab hospitals then need to be followed up with a comprehensive drug rehab program to address the cravings, guilt and depression that often exist in almost unbearable quantities. Without out handling these three factors following medical handlings relapse can almost be assured as one is not yet in a position to live a drug free and productive life.

Each drug, alcohol or toxin has its own long term effects as the result of abuse and addiction. There are a couple of common denominators however when it comes to the long term effects of addiction. One of these is the fact that these drugs and toxins can store in the fat tissues of the body for weeks, months, and even years after cessation of use. These can account for sometimes uncontrollable cravings for the drug or substance even though it hasn’t been used in sometime. Strong feelings of guilt and depression are also common long term effects of addiction due to sacrificing of integrity and values that accompanies the addictive lifestyle. These three points are common to addictions of all sorts and are the reason for continued use and relapse.

Substance abuse generally starts with an attempt to handle pain. This could me mental or physical pain and does not necessarily need to be great. A teenager uses drugs for the first time and finds they helped with shyness and so uses them more and more often, as a false solution to the pains of adolescence. A mother finds relief from family stress with anti-depressants and so continues their use and even increases the dosages. Physical pain is relieved with prescription painkillers and so they are continued more and more frequently. All of these substances have their own particular side-effects which create new situations and new sources of mental and physical pain, and so other substances are now used in an attempt to handle these new pains. Thus most of those entering substance abuse treatment find themselves having problems with not just one substance but multiple substances. Narconon Arrowhead aids the individual in confronting and resolving the use of these substances as well as dealing with the underlying mental and physical pains which resulted in the original and now continued abuse.
